Exzolt 10 mg/ml Solution for Use in Drinking Water is a prescription-only treatment for chickens, used to control poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) infestations. It contains fluralaner, a systemic acaricide that works through medicated drinking water, killing mites when they feed on treated birds. The treatment is given in two doses 7 days apart, helping to break the mite life cycle. It has a zero-day withdrawal period for eggs and is suitable for use in laying hens. This is a POM-V veterinary medicine and requires a valid veterinary prescription before supply.
Product Description
Exzolt is indicated for the treatment of Poultry Red Mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) infestation in pullets, chickens for reproduction and layer hens. Fluralaner is a potent inhibitor of arthropod ligand-gated chloride channels (GABA-receptor and glutamate-receptor), causing paralysis and death of feeding mites. The treatment is systemically distributed throughout all birds in a treated flock after oral administration via drinking water, ensuring that any mite feeding on a treated chicken will encounter lethal concentrations of fluralaner.
Treatment provides two complementary actions: it kills adult mites that feed on treated birds, and it suppresses female mite egg production for 15 days following the first dose, effectively disrupting the mite reproductive cycle. Clinical field studies in commercial egg production farms demonstrated that mite elimination following Exzolt treatment was associated with statistically significant improvements in welfare indicators — including reduced night-time activity, head scratching, head shaking, and preening — and reduced blood corticosterone concentrations.
For Chickens (pullets, breeders and layer hens) — treatment of Dermanyssus gallinae infestation:
Exzolt is administered twice, 7 days apart, via the drinking water at 0.5 mg fluralaner per kg bodyweight (equivalent to 0.05 ml of product per kg bodyweight). The complete two-dose course must be administered in full for a full therapeutic effect.
If a further course of treatment is required, the minimum interval between courses is 3 months.
Dose calculation formula:
Volume of product (ml) per treatment day = Total bodyweight (kg) of all chickens to be treated × 0.05 ml/kg
| Example | Calculation |
|---|---|
| 500 ml of product | Treats 10,000 kg bodyweight (e.g., 5,000 birds at 2 kg each) per treatment day |
| 1 ml of product | Treats 20 kg bodyweight (e.g., 10 birds at 2 kg each) per treatment day |
Each dose should be administered over a period of 4 to 24 hours — long enough to ensure all birds in the house receive the required dose. No other source of drinking water should be available during the medication period. Medicated drinking water must be freshly prepared for each treatment day.
Administration Instructions
Large Poultry Farms (1-litre or 4-litre bottles)
Check the water system for leaks; ensure water reaches all nipple or bell drinkers
For each treatment day, freshly prepare medicated water
Mix the required volume of Exzolt with water in a large medication tank, or create a stock solution in a small container for further dilution via proportioner or dosing pump
Add product and water simultaneously to avoid foaming
Rinse the measuring device into the tank to ensure the full dose is delivered
Stir gently until the solution is homogeneous; connect to the drinking water system
Set the dosing pump to deliver medicated water over the predetermined treatment period
Prime drinker lines until medicated water reaches the end of the line — repeat on each day of administration
After each administration, flush lines with clean (unmedicated) water
Small Poultry Farms / Backyard Flocks (4-ml or 50-ml bottles)
Check the water system for leaks
For each treatment day, freshly prepare medicated water
Mix the required volume of product with water in a measuring device; add product and water simultaneously to avoid foaming
Stir gently until homogeneous; rinse the measuring device and add rinse water to the drinkers
Ensure medicated water is evenly divided between all drinkers
4-ml bottle with syringe (initial use): Remove and discard the original cap. Twist on the in-use cap provided in the carton — this permanently inserts the syringe adaptor. To dose: remove in-use cap; attach the 1-ml dosing syringe to the adaptor; invert the bottle and syringe; pull the plunger to withdraw the correct dose volume; expel any air bubbles and re-draw; return bottle to upright; remove the syringe; replace the in-use cap; administer the dose into the drinking water; rinse the syringe and add rinse water to the drinker. Store the syringe clean and dry between uses.
Medicated drinking water shelf life: 24 hours. Prepare fresh for each treatment day.
Which Animals Can Use Exzolt?
Exzolt is licensed for chickens only: pullets, chickens for reproduction (breeders), and layer hens. It must not be used in other poultry species. There are no contraindications listed in the SPC. No known drug interactions. No known adverse reactions.
The product can be used during lay — safety has been demonstrated in layers and breeders. There are no adverse effects on egg production or reproductive performance when used as directed.
To determine whether to treat, the decision should be based on confirmed identification of D. gallinae or epidemiological evidence of infestation risk. Unnecessary use or use deviating from label instructions increases the risk of resistance development.
Always ensure a valid veterinary prescription is in place before ordering.

Important Warnings
Source: SPC Sections 4.4, 4.5, 4.7, 4.8
Resistance management: Avoid too-frequent or repeated use of isoxazoline-class acaricides over extended periods. Avoid underdosing (from bodyweight underestimation, misadministration, or uncalibrated measuring devices) as this increases resistance selection pressure. Base treatment decisions on confirmed parasite identification or epidemiological evidence
Biosecurity: Strict biosecurity measures at house and farm level must be implemented to prevent re-infestation of treated houses. All infested poultry in nearby houses must also be treated to ensure long-term mite population control
Minimum retreatment interval: If a further course is needed, allow at least 3 months between courses
Complete course: Both doses (Day 1 and Day 8) must be administered in full for full therapeutic effect. Do not stop treatment after the first dose
Water access: No other water source should be available during the medication period — ensure all birds can access only the medicated drinkers during treatment
Dose accuracy: Body weight of the flock must be determined as accurately as possible; use a calibrated measuring device for the product volume
No known adverse reactions at recommended doses in pullets, layers, or breeders
Overdose safety: No adverse reactions observed at 5× the recommended dose for 3× the duration in 3-week-old and adult chickens. No negative effects on egg production at 5× dose in layers. No adverse effects on reproductive performance in breeders at 3× dose for 2× duration
No known drug interactions. In the absence of compatibility studies, do not mix Exzolt with other veterinary medicinal products
Environmental precautions: Medicated drinking water must not enter surface waters or water courses — fluralaner is very persistent in soil under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and is dangerous to aquatic invertebrates. Dispose of unused product in accordance with local requirements; do not dispose via wastewater
Human safety — skin/eye irritation: The product may be mildly irritating to skin and/or eyes. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling. Wash hands and any contacted skin with soap and water after use. In case of eye contact, rinse immediately and thoroughly with water. If the product is spilled, remove any affected clothing
