Description

Malaseb Shampoo is a prescription topical medicine licensed for use in dogs and cats. Containing chlorhexidine digluconate and miconazole nitrate as active ingredients — a combination antibacterial and antifungal with demonstrated synergistic activity — the shampoo is indicated for the treatment and control of seborrhoeic dermatitis in dogs, and as an aid in the treatment of ringworm in cats. Malaseb is a POM-V product and requires a valid veterinary prescription before it can be supplied.

Malaseb Shampoo combines two complementary antimicrobial actives. Chlorhexidine digluconate is a bisbiguanide with broad-spectrum bactericidal and bacteriostatic activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, working by interfering with bacterial energy transport mechanisms and causing coagulation of bacterial cell contents. Miconazole nitrate is an imidazole antifungal agent with both fungicidal and fungistatic activity against yeasts, working by inhibiting ergosterol incorporation into fungal cell membranes, thereby increasing cytotoxic hydrogen peroxide within the fungal cell wall. In vitro studies have demonstrated synergistic activity between the two actives specifically against Microsporum canis. Both actives achieve high concentrations in the hair coat and on the skin during the 10-minute contact period, exceeding the MICs for their respective target organisms. Neither active is significantly absorbed through the skin.

For Dogs:

  • Treatment and control of seborrhoeic dermatitis associated with Malassezia pachydermatis and Staphylococcus intermedius
  • Applied twice weekly until symptoms subside, then weekly or as necessary to keep the condition under control

For Cats:

  • Aid in the treatment of ringworm due to Microsporum canis, used in conjunction with griseofulvin only
  • Applied twice weekly for a minimum period until coat brushings are negative for M. canis culture; maximum treatment period is 16 weeks
  • Clipping of the coat prior to treatment should be considered depending on haircoat length and type

Which Animals Can Use Malaseb Shampoo?

Malaseb Shampoo is licensed for use in dogs and cats. It must not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine digluconate, miconazole nitrate, or any of the excipients. In cats, it must only be used in conjunction with griseofulvin for the treatment of ringworm — it should not be used as a standalone treatment for ringworm in this species. The product in conjunction with griseofulvin must not be used in pregnant cats, as griseofulvin is contraindicated in pregnancy. Puppies and kittens must not come into contact with nursing females who have been treated until the coat has fully dried. Always use under veterinary direction.

Directions for Use

This is a prescription medication and must be used exactly as directed by your veterinary surgeon. For use on the skin and coat (cutaneous use) only. Wet the animal thoroughly with clean water, then apply the shampoo at several points on the body and massage thoroughly into the coat and skin. Use sufficient shampoo to raise a good lather, ensuring the product is worked in around the lips, under the tail, and between the toes. Allow the animal to stand for 10 minutes before rinsing off completely with clean water. Leave the coat to dry naturally in a warm, draught-free environment. Do not allow the animal to lick itself during application, the contact period, or before the coat is fully dry. Refer to the dispensing label for the prescribed treatment frequency and duration.

Important Warnings

Source: SPC Sections 3.4 & 3.5

  • For external use only — do not allow the animal to ingest the product during shampooing or before the coat has dried; take care to prevent the animal inhaling the product or getting it into the nose or mouth
  • In case of accidental contact with the animal's eyes, rinse with plenty of water
  • To help prevent reoccurrence of infection, appropriate environmental control measures should be applied — including cleaning and disinfection of kennels and beds
  • In cats, shampooing may initially increase the recovery of M. canis on brush culture — this is expected and does not indicate treatment failure
  • Puppies and kittens must not come into contact with nursing females following treatment until the coat has fully dried
  • Use should be in accordance with official national and regional antimicrobial policies
  • Ringworm in cats is infectious to humans — wear gloves and cover arms during clipping and shampooing of infected cats
  • When shampooing a cat, wash and dry hands gently afterwards; do not scrub
  • People with known hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine, miconazole or any excipients must avoid contact with this product
  • This product can cause eye irritation in humans — avoid contact with eyes; if accidental eye contact occurs, rinse with plenty of water; if irritation persists, consult a doctor
  • Avoid excessive handling and stroking of treated animals immediately after treatment
